Plastic Raw Material and Inventions

The raw elements for making plastics are

Plastic raw materials are essential in everyday items like cars, toothbrushes, and refrigerators. Polymers, or polymers, are made from long-chain chemical compounds and can be altered by adding pigments, glass fiber, or plasticizers. Common materials used in plastic manufacturing include polypropylene for vehicle interiors, polyamide for engine compartments, and ABS for kitchen appliances and computers.

Materials used to make various plastics

John Wesley Hyatt, an American inventor, is known for his invention of celluloid, the first synthetic material. He and his brothers founded the Albany Billiard Ball Company and the Celluloid Manufacturing Company to capitalize on the production of his discovery’s raw material. Celluloid eventually replaced ivory as the raw material in billiard-ball manufacturing, but it was phased out due to its high combustibility.

Hyatt’s inventions were commercialized through various companies, including the Hyatt Pure Water Company, Hyatt filter, Hyatt roller bearing, and machine sewing machines. He filed over 200 patents, making him on par with Thomas Edison in terms of ground-breaking innovations. Hyatt received the Perkin Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry in 1914 and passed away in Short Hills, New Jersey.

In 1954, Celanese Corporation acquired his Celluloid Manufacturing Company, one of the leading U.S. manufacturers in the plastics sector. The company’s success was attributed to its ability to survive high temperatures, ultraviolet light, and low water absorption.
